NIMBY

"Nimby" has passed into the language as a form of abuse. A nimby is apparently someone who from narrow and selfish motives opposes and obstructs imaginative projects designed to bring benefits to the wider community.

In fact, of course, a nimby is any citizen who tries to defend their home and their neighbourhood from plans which would destroy the view, pollute the environment, overload the transport network, upset the ecosystem and knock the value of their homes.

When it comes to our own back yard, we are all nimbys, and every nimby deserves respect for ensuring that future generations have a countryside to enjoy.

"In recent years, the word NIMBY - "Not In My BackYard" - has been given a pejorative meaning, by housebuilders and politicians whom local democracy does not suit. Yet it seems to me a fundamental and absolutely proper right, that local people should have a real voice in what is done to their own community. Why should not people object to horrible things being done in their backyards?"

Sir Max Hastings, CPRE Chairman.

Mr Richard Moore (Hascombe)
"I find it staggering that such an area of outstanding beauty, bordering a conservation area, can be considered for such an unnecessary development as this. There is not a shortage of housing in this part of the country and it seems that the only purpose of constructing this new town, is purely commercial. It goes without saying, that roads in this area, already plagued with HGV traffic, in spite of road signs, leading to and through Hascombe, say "Unsuitable for HGV traffic" will become overburdened and, more importantly, dangerous to horseriders, car drivers and residents. I strongly oppose any development, such as that proposed."
